Indira Soura Jala Vikasam program: A Glimpse of Solar Hope for Telangana’s Farmers
In a bold attempt to end the long-standing power shortage of Telangana’s farmers, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy initiated the ambitious Indira Soura Jala Vikasam program. The groundbreaking project is aimed at retrofitting farm borewells as solar-powered ones, giving free, round-the-clock power to farmers

The very title pays homage to Indira Gandhi, representing the Congress government’s role in bringing inclusive rural development. Not power—it’s about restoring confidence and integrity to agriculture.

What is Indira Soura Jala Vikasam?
Short on Bills, Long on Sustainability
This plan, which is also referred to as the short solar irrigation scheme, will get 25,000 sets of solar pumps operational in phase one and will, more importantly, focus on marginalized farmers. The farm borewells will be operated by solar units, lessening the reliance on expensive and unstable power supply.
This green revolution not only reduces farmers’ reliance on subsidies and whimsical power but also embraces sustainable agriculture and green energy in the long run.
Why Farmers are Calling it a Game Changer
Free Solar Power = Empowered Farming
Think of farming without worrying when the electricity will arrive, or how much it will cost. That’s the new script being written in Telangana. The Indira Soura Jala Vikasam project:
- Eliminates farmers’ monthly electricity bills.
- Delivers a 24/7 power supply using solar.
- Guarantees improved water management for crops.
- Reduces environmental impact with clean energy.
- Aims to empower more than 2.5 lakh farmers in subsequent phases.
- It’s not a subsidy by itself—completely a complete step towards agricultural independence.
CM Revanth Reddy’s Greener Telangana Vision
During the launch, CM Revanth Reddy emphasized that this is merely the starting point. He vowed:
“Every single borewell in Telangana will be solar-powered. We will not provide free power to our farmers, but a hope-filled future.”
With this project, Telangana makes a giant leap towards being India’s solar farming model, fusing technology and tradition for a green tomorrow.
How This Scheme Pledges Congress’s 6 Guarantees
This project is one of the key pledges of the Congress manifesto. With this project, Revanth Sarkar demonstrates his pledge to his pre-poll vows. Launching this project in just 5 months of assuming office has already delivered a confident message to rural Telangana: “We deliver.”
It also arrives as most farmers are grappling with increased input costs, loss of groundwater, and capricious rainfall, making solar-powered irrigation an appropriate intervention.
Final Thoughts: A Bright Path Forward
The Indira Soura Jala Vikasam scheme isn’t merely an infrastructure upgrade—it’s a lifeline. For thousands of farmers, it provides immediate relief and guarantees long-term resilience.
When the sun comes higher in Telangana’s fields, it’s clear that this is not about power or water—it’s about hope, pride, and empowerment for India’s real backbone: its farmers.
